Gridshell for Food and Wellness Club

In this research-based design studio, the application of gridshells, a form-resistant structure, in a Food and Wellness Club design is experimented. Through physical form-finding and numerical/digital technologies, the virtual and the real is combined, designs of creative architectural forms that are irrespective of any compositional, structural or construction principle in the purely digital world are tested, modified, improved and adapted for realization in the physical world.

The studio begins with exercises on the design of different gridshells.  Through hands-on model making, numerical simulations with Grasshopper, Kangaroo and Karamba, and simple design exercises,  various factors that affects the formation of gridshells like boundary conditions (existing walls, different ground levels, cuts/openings), materials & composition, construction methods and parametric definition etc are tested and analyzed.  Technology and construction aspects are highlighted throughout the activity.
